Ulcerative colitis
As mentioned earlier, ulcerative colitis involves only large intestine (called as colon) and it involves only the inner most lining of colon called as mucosa in uncomplicated state.
Various parts of the large intestine are mentioned earlier. It is important to know how much portion of large intestine is involved by ulcerative colitis.

In ulcerative colitis, inflammation starts in rectum and spreads upwards. If there involvement of only rectum, then it is called as proctitis. If the disease extends beyond this to sigmoid colon, then it is called as procto-sigmoiditis. If there s involvement of rectum, sigmoid colon and descending colon, then it is called as lett sided colitis. If there is involvement of whole colon, it is known as pancolitis Whatever area involved by ulcerative colitis, the involvement is continuous without normal area in between.
